Know when to get your oil changed—without the sticker.

Keeping your Toyota’s oil in proper condition has many benefits. Driving with properly maintained oil levels can keep your car moving safely and reduce your risk of stalling or breaking down, especially in warm weather. Stay on top of your car’s oil maintenance schedule, and you can keep your vehicle in great condition for a long time.

Look for these tell-tale signs.

  • Is the “teapot” light on your dashboard on? This could mean trouble. Many vehicles that don’t have an oil change light will instead light up the “check engine” light—which could indicate a serious issue.
  • Your oil will slowly degrade over miles, so if you’ve taken a major trip or put more miles on than usual, you might be due for an oil change.
  • If you see what looks like smoke trailing behind your vehicle, it could mean there’s a problem with your oil, or a lack of oil.
  • Quick and constant changes in your oil level could indicate a more serious problem with your oil system.
  • If your engine makes a knocking sound while the vehicle is in motion, it could mean an issue with your oil system.
  • If you hear a ticking noise while your engine warms up, it could mean the oil is struggling to make its way through the engine.
  • When your oil needs a change, your Toyota might start working extra hard to get you from point A to point B. If you feel vibrations or shaking motions when you idle, it could be time for a change.
